Starting today you can create and display dynamic custom fields created with the popular Advanced Custom Fields plugin. ACF is one of the three main custom fields plugins that we plan to integrate Brizy with. Toolset and Pods to follow in the near future.
This is yet another important step to strengthen the power of Brizy Pro and to allow you to create amazing custom websites. We are one step closer to the official Brizy Pro launch.
More about on how we plan to launch the Pro plus a list of all the features we’ll add in the coming weeks/months can be found in this article.
Here is what you’ll find in this article. Use the links below to jump to a specific section:
Download & Install
Brizy Pro can’t be accessed directly from your WordPress admin. The Pro is an actual extension of the Brizy Free plugin so need to download the Pro plugin from your Brizy.io account and manually install it in your WordPress.
Step 1. Login into your Brizy.io account and download the Brizy Pro plugin .zip
Step 2. Login into your WordPress admin and manually install & activate Brizy Pro from Plugins > Add New (Upload the entire zip you downloaded from your Brizy account, don’t unzip it.)
Important: The Pro will only work if you have Brizy Free installed & activated.
You will already have the 0.0.3. installed, you’ll need to download & install the Pro again from your Brizy.io account on every update we make.
Don’t worry, we are working on the update part. You’ll be able to do it directly from your WordPress admin once we officially launch the Pro.
You might ask yourself why do we need custom fields (options)? Isn’t WordPress packed with everything we need?
As you may know, WordPress was created primarily as a blogging tool and not as CMS to create websites. Sure you can create a simple basic website with WordPress out of the box, but if you want a more complex website, I’m thinking real estate, events or auto-motor, you’ll need the power of a custom fields plugin.
What a plugin like ACF, Toolset or Pods does is lets you add custom fields you might need in pages or posts. Let’s take a look at a standard WordPress page:
Not much to work with if you want to create an event page for example. Most likely you’ll need a speaker field, an event description, an event image, a price and so on.
ACF lets you add all that in an instant.
Then you can use those fields to dynamically display them with Brizy and together with the Templating feature you can create some cool templates that will apply across multiple (events/ real estate/hotels/cars/etc) pages of your stunning website.
Most likely you know ACF inside out, but I’ll still go through the steps on how display ACF dynamic content with Brizy. We’ll create an Event page just to show you a couple of basic things you can do with ACF and Brizy:
Step 1. Install the ACF plugin from the WordPress repository.
If you don’t know how to install a WP plugin, you can check out this tutorial.
Step 2. Go to Custom Fields in the sidebar and create a new fields group. Here is an example. where I’ve added some fields for our dummy event page.
Step 3. Publish your new field group.
Depending on where you set the Location for your custom fields (I’ve done it to all the top level pages) you can check out your advanced custom fields by opening one of those pages.
Step 4. Now that you’ve added your advanced custom fields to your page, you can use Brizy’s dynamic content to create a template for your events. If you don’t know how to use the dynamic content in Brizy, check out this article.
Here is how our dummy event example looks on the front end.
The Advanced Custom Fields plugin has a Pro version that comes with a gallery element and a bunch of other cool stuff. For the time being, we’ve only looked at the free version of ACF but we’ll test & integrate the ACF Pro as well in the future.
This is just the beginning, more cool features are coming to Brizy Pro in the following weeks. Please add any suggestions/issue you have on GitHub. Also, consider joining our Facebook community where we discuss all things Brizy every day.
Until next time.
